Secretary's report 2020 (1) - 25/01/2021

2020 has been the strangest of years . the year began with great promise especially for our under 21 footballer swho were looking forward to a semi-final against Bandon, having defeated Ahan Gaels in the first round of the U21Bchampionship,

Our Junior footballers travelled to meet Garnish in the Junior B football league on March 1st and our hurlers played O'Donovan Rossa in the JBHL in Skibbereen.

Then Covid 19 struck  and the whole country went into lock down. Randal Og and Ballinacarriga  Community entered the world of virtual reality.

The Southern Star and Kieran McCarthy went to Twitter with the Pitch Perfect competition. Randals along with 31 other Carbery and Beara clubs contacted friends and acquaintances far and wide to garner support and were thrilled to get to the final against Tadhg Mac Carthaigh. Our luck ran out in the final unfortunately and we were narrowly beaten in the early hours of April 26th. not even a vote from Michael Healy Rae could save us.

Congratulations to Tadhg MacCarthaigh and to Kieran McCarthy who kept us all enthralled with his  Pitch Perfect competition throughout the early weeks of lock down.

On the June Bank holiday week end . once more boredom and itchy feet syndrome set in and so we decided, along with Ballinacarriga & Lisbealad Community to organise a fundraiser for Cancer Connect West Cork and Jack & Jill foundation. With permission of Mick and Maureen O'Brien, Gene and Padraig O'Sullivan lit up Ballinacarriga Castle over the Bank holiday weekend.  With as much social media advertising as we possibly could, we asked people to drive by the castle , donate to our chosen charities , and we lit a candle/nightlight  on the steps leading up to the castle for them.

The support we received from Ballinacarriga, Lisbealad and the wider West Cork community was phenomenal, We divided the €5,795 raised   between our two charities and presented the money to their representatives at the steps of the Castle on June 7th.

We were delighted to receive a Cork County Council Mayoral Award in June as recognition of our contribution to helping our local community during this unprecedented time.

Play resumed again in July with restrictions in place. We all grew familiar with the GAA Return to Play app. Each coach, mentor and player had to log in to the Return to Play app. By doing this they were informing the club that they were Covid symptom free.

The West Cork hurling championship went Randals' way, defeating O'Donovan Rossa, Barryroe and then on to the final against Kilbrittain at Ahiohill which Randals won a point Randal Og  2-9 Kilbrittain 0-14.

The photograph of John Collins with his seven nephews , who all played a major role in the victory over Kilbrittain was definitely one of the highlights of our media year, I want to thank Denis Hurley and Joe Blake for including coverage of Randals' win against Kilbrittain in this year's Cork GAA Yearbook and giving us a great lift.

We are delighted with the response to the new Cork GAA Rebels Bounty Draw. we congratulate our sellers especially Dan O'Sullivan and Frank O'Donnell who are putting Trojan work into promoting and selling tickets .
