The opening game of the football league, Garnish v Randals, was played at Cahermore on Sunday 1st March.
Weather conditions, in the aftermath of Saturday's storm, were not too bad, although there was a cold blustery wind from the west, with continual wintry showers. Luckily the showers stayed away for most of the game.
Garnish started strongly and were three points up after as many minutes. Randals first score came around the fifth minute. from a move started by Peter Collins and finished off by Seadhna Crowley.
Seadhna added a second point from a free and Seamus Crowley sent over the equaliser following a great run through the Garnish defence with eight minutes gone.
The home side regained the lead a minute later and only great defensive work by Peter Collins prevented them from adding a goal. However they increased their lead with another point, 0-5 to 0-3, around the eleventh minute.
A scoreless period followed. The first goal of the game, set up by Barry O'Driscoll, and finished off by Conor O'Neill, came after twenty five minutes. Garnish got another equaliser, but then came a second goal from a penalty well taken by Conor O'Neill.
A Garnish point came, close to half time, and it was 2-3 to 0-7 at the break.
A good start to the second half saw Randals increase the lead. An early point from Aidan O'Sullivan and a great goal by Barry O'Driscoll, and it was 3-4 to 0-7 around the thirty seventh minute.
That was as good as it got, as Garnish, now with wind advantage, were on top over the next twenty minutes and sent over nine points in succession during that period. Seadhna Crowley scored from a free late in the game but Garnish had the last word and it was :
