It was another fine Summer evening, this time in Donoughmore, as Randal Og and Shanballymore lined out for county junior football championship match. This was on Friday evening last, 8th June, - a third round game with the winners going through to the quarter-final.
A tough game it was. Randals were well in control for most of the first half, especially so in the early stages, but came severe pressure during the second period.
A significant early lead was reduced to a single point with about ten minutes left in the game, but Randals held firm and came back for more scores before the final whistle.
Randals were into the attack from the throw in. A Brian Dullea block down prevented a clearance, a free in followed and Seadhna Crowley sent over the first score of the game.
Retaining possession, Randals kept most of the play in the Shanballymore half , and more scores came, two from Seadhna Crowley and another from Barry O'Driscoll. The first goal came after nine minutes, when Barry O'Driscoll, getting a well placed pass from Sam Kingston, sent a blistering shot to the net.
Seadhna got through for two more points with Shanballymore getting their first score in between.
It was 1-6 to 0-1 after fourteen minutes but the North Cork men began to come more into the game at this stage. They scored two quick points followed by a goal and Randals' lead was down to three.
Then came a crucial score when Seadhna Crowley, gaining possession following a free in, scored the third goal of the game. Only one more score before half time, a point by Shanballymore, to make it 2-6 to 1-4.
It was a dour low scoring second half. Shanballymore were almost through for a goal in the opening minute but were foiled by Denis Lynch.
They scored four unanswered points over the next fifteen minutes, to reduce Randals' lead to just one going into the final quarter.
Seadhna Crowley scored from a free, but this was replied to by Shanballymore and it was 2-7 to 1-9 with about five minutes left in the game.
The game was in the balance for the next few minutes. Randals defended resolutely and Shanballymore failed to close the gap.
At the other end of the field Seadhna Crowley slotted over another free and Sam Kingston had the last word, with a point in injury time, to clinch victory. Full time score was : Randal Og 2-9 Shanballymore 1-9.
