Randals met Kilbrin in the second round of the county junior B football championship at Kilmichael on Saturday evening last. It was a fine dry evening, with a fresh breeze coming from the west.
Kilbrin, who had a great championship run last year, going all the way to the county final, were expected to be formidable opponents, but as some famous Kerry man said one time, it's what happens on the day that counts.
It was a low scoring first half. Kilbrin had wind advantage, but some great defensive work by Randals and some scoring chances missed saw them trailing for all but a few minutes of the first half.
Ian Crowley showed the way with a point in the first minute. Patrick Lynch made it two on twelve minutes.
A period of Kilbrin superiority followed. They missed a close in free and came close to scoring a goal before opening their account with a point after seventeen minutes. This was cancelled out by Eoin O'Sullivan five minutes later. With twenty eight minutes gone it was 0-3 to 0-1.
Then a schmozzle, in the Randals' goalmouth, saw the ball cross the line for the only goal of the game, a goal which gave Kilbrin their short lived lead.
Two points, one from a free, by Seadhna Crowley and another by Eoin O'Sullivan all came before half time and Randals were 0-6 to 1-1 ahead.
Randals had the advantage of what wind there was in the second half. The forwards, with Stephen Crowley back to his best after last year's injury, were now well in control and the scoring rate increased accordingly.
Kilbrin did get the first score early in the half, but points from Seamus Crowley, Barry O'Driscoll and Gerard Lynch and another from Seadhna Crowley stretched Randals lead. Kilbrin getting one in betwen, added another from a free in the fourteenth minute to bring their tally to 1-4.
Seadhna Crowley was on target again, with a point from play and another from a free, and then Eoin O'Sullivan and Donncha Collins added two more.
Two points from Kilbrin made it 0-14 to 1-6, with fifty five minutes gone.
Randals finished strongly. Sam Kingston got the first of four scores with Seadhna Crowley finishing off the other three and it was :
Randal Og 0-18 Kilbrin 1-6 at full time.
