Randals and Castletownroche met, for the first time ever, on last Saturday evening, 28th April, at Rathpeacon, which of course is to the north side of Cork City and from which there was a panoramic view across the valley of the territories of Glen Rovers and Na Piarsaigh.
Showers that threatened during the game stayed away for the most part, but the ground did show some evidence of the recent and ongoing weather conditions.
Overall it was an enthralling encounter with the fortunes changing dramatically from one side to the other over the hour.
Eoin O'Donovan opened the scoring, with a point from a free, in the second minute. Following two Castletownroche points, he was on target again to make it 0-2 all after nine minutes.
The first game changing period came on the thirteen minute mark, when Castletownroche scored their first goal. Two points and then another goal after twenty minutes put them 2-4 to 0-2 ahead.
A one sided outcome looked likely at that stage, but then the game changed again as Randals fought back dramatically. Three great points in succession from Seadhna Crowley, a brilliant Donncha Collins goal and another point from Seadhna Crowley and there was just the minimum between them. A Castletownroche point increased their lead slightly, but a determined Randals' assault finished off with Sam Kingston finding the net and making it 2-6 to 2-5 at half time.
Another pointed free by Eoin O'Donovan increased that lead early in the second half. But the game changed for a third time as disaster struck again with two Catletownroche goals, in little more than a minute, and they were ahead by 4-5 to 2-7.
The game was not over yet. Randals again rallied. Eoin O'Donovan pointed three frees, with Castletownroche getting one between. A point by Johnny Collins on twenty minutes and another by Patrick Crowley and the scores were level once again, 4-6 to 2-12.
But it was Castletownroche who finished strongly and three scores in the closing minutes gave them the victory.
