Randals travelled to Ballydehob on Friday night to meet the home side, Gabriel Rangers, in the first round of the Junior Football league. The snow which fell all over West Cork overnight had disappeared and the pitch, considering all the rain we have had over recent weeks, was in good condition.
There was end to end football from early on but scores were slow in coming. Gabriels were first on the mark with a point after about five minutes.
Increased pressure from Randals came as the game went on. Scoring chances were created and, even though a few went astray, points came from Barry O'Driscoll, Sam Kingston, Conor O'Donovan and Barry O'Driscoll again.
A point from Gabriels, coming up to half time, left it 0-4 to 0-2 at the end of a low scoring half.
Gabriels stepped up their game on resumption and it was score for score in the early minutes of the second half.
A point from Gabriels came in the first minute but Owen O'Sullivan replied with a well taken free and Sam Kingston increased the margin with another point a minute later.
Two points from Gabriels left just the minimum between them, after about eight minutes.
But then came the first game changing score, when Barry O'Driscoll finished off a great move to find the Gabriel Rangers' net. It was 1-6 to 0-5 at the end of the third quarter.
Randals' seventh point came from Daniel O'Sullivan. Gabriels came back for their sixth score a minute later but two more Randal Og goals which followed were decisive. The first was finished off by Kevin Dullea and Barry O'Driscoll was on the mark for his second a minute later.
Gabriels fought back and got a point and a goal before the end but Kevin Dullea had the last word with a point close to the final whistle.
Full time score was Randal Og 3-8 Gabriel Rangers 1-7
