At recent meeting of GAA Central Council it was decided that "the Mark" will be introduced in all football competitions, Intercounty and Club, from 21st January 2017.

This arises from motion submitted by Standing Commitee on Playing Rules which was passed at Congress last February.

"When a player catches the ball cleanly from a kickout, without it touching the ground, on or past the 45 metre line nearest the kick out point, he shall be awarded a mark by the referee. The player awarded the "Mark" shall have the option of (a) taking a free kick or (b) playing on immediately."
