Junior hurling championship -Randals v Gabriel Rangers - 22/08/2019

Randals and Gabriel Rangers met at Leap on Saturday evening last, 17th August, in the quarter-final of the Carbery junior B hurling championship.

It was a dry evening, as the showers that had been forecast decided to stay away, but there was a fresh south easterly wind which did it's best to interfere with scoring efforts throughout the game.

Randals started well, even though Gabriels got the opening score, and with Conor O'Donovan getting the first goal of the game, were six points ahead at the end of the first quarter.

Scores were scarce for the remainder of the half. Gabriels got the goal back around the twenty three minute mark and there were four points between the sides at half time,

A powerful opening ten minutes, in the second half, saw Gabriels score five points in succession and regain a lead that they had held in the early minutes.

However they did not hold the lead for long as an equalising point, from a free, by Johnny Collins was a game changer and a prelude to a series of Randals' scores while only one more point was conceded.

The first score of the game, a point by Gabriels, came in the second minute. Randals' response came quickly, with a point by Eoin O'Donovan a minute later, another by Donncha Collins and a third, from a free, by Eoin O'Donovan to make it 0-3 to 0-2 after five  minutes. Gabriels replied with a point from a free but then with nine minutes gone came the first goal with Conor O'Donovan. brilliantly catching  a high ball near and finishing it to the net.

Two minutes later Donncha Collins raced through the defence to send over another point and Eoin O'Donovan added another from a free.

It was 1-5 to 0-2 at the fifteen minute mark.

Gabriels scored a point from a free. Eoin O'Donovan sent over another minutes later.

The Gabriels' goal came around the the twenty third minute and it was 1-6 to 1-3. Goals change games but the effect of this one was lessened by a quick response from Randals - a point inside a minute by Patrick Crowley followed by another from a free by Eoin O'Donovan. Gabriels got a point from a free in injury time and it was 1-8 to 1-4 at the break.

The opening ten minutes of the second half belonged to Gabriels, They got five points in succession from play, to regain a lead that they had held in opening minutes - 1-9 to 1-8.

An equalising point from a free by Johnny Collins with forty minutes gone was a prelude to another game changing period. Randals were back in control. Two points from Barry Lynch, with Conor O' Donovan getting another in between and there was a three points margin again.

Gabriels got back a point from a free, but  further scores came from Conor O'Donovan and Donncha Collins. A late goal effort was foiled by Patrick Lynch, and it was:  Randal Og  1-14   Gabriel Rangers  1-10 at the final whistle.
