Under 21 hurling championship final - 14/11/2018

The under 21 hurling championship final, Randals versus St. Patrick's, went ahead in Skibbereen on Saturday evening last.

It was a tough hard fought game, made more so by the fact that it went to extra time.

There was a slow start, with a low scoring first half, but this was balanced by a dramatic second half in which  convincing leads, on both sides, were wiped out and they were on level terms at the end of the hour.

Top scorer on the day, Eoin O'Donovan, made an impact early on, with three points in the opening minutes.

A St. Patrick's goal made it all square but a great goal, created and finished off, by Conor O'Donovan, put Randals into the lead again.

Another point from Eoin O'Donovan, and two more for St. Patrick's, from frees, made 1-4 to 1-2 at half time.

The third quarter belonged to St. Patrick's as they scored a goal, a point and another goal, without reply to go ahead by 3-3 to 1-4.

Randals looked to be in trouble, but the resurgence came and the game changed dramatically.

Goals, from Eoin O'Donovan, Mark Shanahan and Eoin, again, were followed by points from Mark Shanahan and Cathal Duggan, and it was 4-6 to 3-3, as normal full time approached.

However the drama wasn't over yet and two St. Patrick's goals came in the closing minutes.

It was Randal Og  4-6  St. Patrick's  5-3, at the end of the hour.

Into extra time, and Randals got the best possible start when Eoin O'Donovan struck, yet again, for a goal in thr first minute.

He got another point a minute later.

St. Patrick's, from a free, got a point back. Padraig Galvin and Eoin got two more and Randals led by 5-9 to 5-4 at the change over.

Three more, from Eoin, in the second period, with St. Patrick's getting one back in between, and it was  5-12 to 5-5.  A late late goal for St. Patricks was the last score of the game, and it was Randal Og  5-12   St. Patrick's  6-5 at the final whistle.

There were great scenes of delight, as Divisional Secretary, Donie McCarthy, presented the Championship Cup to winning captain, Conor O'Donovan.

Well done again to all the players  and selectors and of course to team manager, Gerard Collins, on a great victory, a fitting result for all the hard work put in over the year.
